Fielding needs to improve, says Dhoni

Johannesburg, Sep 19 (PTI) Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni today conceded that his side's fielding standard needs to improve considerably for it to do well at the Champions Trophy starting here from September 22.

"Our fielding standards, compared to the ones we had in Australia in 2007, is now very different. A lot of it has to do because of different conditions in which cricketers come up," Dhoni said in a pre-tournament press conference.

"I, for instance, come from a place where throwing and diving could really hurt. Newer generation of cricketers are much better in sliding and throwing themselves in the field.

National Cricket Academy and all those camps have also helped," he added.

Dhoni said the Indians, who take on New Zealand in their only warm-up game tomorrow, cannot be expected to become the world's best side in matter of days.

"It's not like, we can be world beaters in seven days.

Records don't matter, winning does: Tendulkar

New Delhi: It was the winter of 1989 when a 16-year old Sachin Tendulkar made his debut for India against Pakistan, their fiercest rival. He came armed with an already formidable reputation and began the journey that scaled a summit that a few would imagine was possible.

Twenty years later, Sachin Tendulkar is a legend among his peers and a colossal that history would place on a heady pedestal. He still plays the game with limitless enthusiasm and continues to enchant.

CNN-IBN brings you the man himself, his unmatched success and the hunger that continues to drive him on in Tendulkar@20 in his own words.

CNN-IBN: Are you still as excited as ever to begin a new season of cricket?

Sachin Tendulkar: I am always excited to play cricket. Twenty years ago, it was a similar kind of excitement and today also it's the same. When it's cricket, the heart starts beating faster and it's not just me, but everyone around us. They all are looking forward to the season and so am I.

CNN-IBN: As you said, as the season starts, the heart starts beating faster but now you must know how to deal with the positive nervous energy in a much better way than when you were 16.

Sachin Tendulkar: Initially, I didn't realise this but as time went by I came to know that this is how my body gears up before a big game. I am a little restless and that's how my body is preparing and my subconscious mind is getting ready for the event. Now I am used to it. So I like it when I am a little restless. I'm comfortable with it.

CNN-IBN: Have you redefined the word genius? In two months time, you will become the second cricketer to complete two decades in international cricket. How do you look back at this entire journey?

Sachin Tendulkar: It's been a fantastic journey. I thoroughly enjoyed it and every moment has been a special one. Playing for India means the world to me. I grew up dreaming about playing for India and I am living my dream. It's almost going to be 20 years now.

I am thankful to God that I have been given the opportunity to play for the country for such a long period. I have been fortunate because so many people dream of playing for the nation and I have been doing it for a couple of decades. So I am quite happy about it.

CNN-IBN: You have broken almost all records a batsman can. So now what motivates you personally, apart from the team goals like winning a World Cup for India? Do you aspire to get 15, 000 runs or hundred centuries?

Sachin Tendulkar: First of all, when you play for India, you do not need any external factor to motivate you. When you play for India, you are motivated from within. I don't think anybody plays for the records. Records are just mere reflection of what I have been able to do for the country. It's just my contribution.

While playing, if records are broken, it's great. But what we look to do is go step by step towards achieving the team's target. And while achieving that the various things that happen are always welcomed. The most important thing is the team's glory and that's what we all focus on.

CNN-IBN: But someone as Roger Federer aims to have this many grand slam titles. Do you see yourself achieving 15, 000 runs? Is it something you are looking to achieve?

Sachin Tendulkar: I have never said I want to score 15,000 runs. When I achieved 10,000 runs Sunil Gavaskar said to me that I should achieve 15,000. And that was what I was asked and I answered that if my hero tells me to do something, I have to put a big effort to do that. And that is where it ended.

It was projected differently. I have never made such big statements. I would like to enjoy the game. And if it has to happen, it will happen.

The only target that I can say I was given was 35 Test hundreds because we grew up watching Sunil Gavaskar and every now and then his examples were used. And if you wanted to be regarded as one of the greatest players, then you have to get to 34 hundreds and go past that. That was the target. I am quite happy because Gavaskar played a role in motivating all of us and left such a legacy that the next generation got inspired by what he did. And in every step in our cricketing life, we have used his example.

CNN-IBN: Gavaskar was a hero for you, Rahul and Sourav. But now you are the hero for the next generation. Piyush Chawla was born in the same year you made your debut. So what do you think you have given to the art of Indian batting?

Sachin Tendulkar: I don't know. I guess I am the wrong person to ask this question. I have just gone ahead and expressed myself. I have just played the game I know and I have been taught. And if the kids watching me got inspired then I think it's for them to answer this question. You can ask them what were the qualities they liked and what were the factors that motivated them.

For me I can say that winning the 1983 World Cup was a huge thing and again the victory in Australia in 1985 when Ravi Shastri became the champion of the champions played a huge role in motivating me and making me feel that one day I have to be a part of this team. So I will leave the question you asked for the youngsters to answer.

CNN-IBN: Do you think you brought a Viv Richards style batting to India, one which is aggressive?

Sachin Tendulkar: My two batting heroes have always been Gavaskar and Viv Richards and I have always felt that I should be a mixture of both. When it comes to attacking, I should be able to play shots like Richards and when it comes to concentration, mental toughness, determination and guts, I should be Gavaskar. I grew up watching them and wanted to play like them. And also, achieve what they have been able to for their countries.

CNN-IBN: Sir Don Bradman said you bat like him. That's not a small compliment. Do you feel there is any young cricketer who plays like you?

Sachin Tendulkar: The statement from Sir Don was a huge thing for me. I remember I was in Sharjah and I was told that this is what Sir Don said about you and I was on top of the world. I was extremely happy and I didn't know how to react. Then I got the opportunity to meet him on his 90th birthday. I spent an hour with me, which is always going to be the highlight of my life.

If I have to describe somebody who comes closest to my batting style, it has to be Virender Sehwag. Even at home, people get confused as to who is batting because the attire is almost the same after he started wearing those leg-guards.

CNN-IBN: There is a massive book coming on you called the Sachin Tendulkar opus. Now when we saw the list institutes on which the books have been written. It's Manchester United, Wimbledon, Formula One, Maradona and Mohammad Ali. Where do you see your name on that list?

Sachin Tendulkar: I see myself somewhere there. It's a huge book. I have got Mohammad Ali's book at home. It weighs 35 kilos and is a pictorial book. It's like watching a movie with some exclusive pictures and you won't get to see anywhere else. And I can vouch for that because I have seen couple of Mohammad Ali's pictures in that book that I have not seen anywhere else.

It's very exclusive and the moment I saw the copy, I said that yes I will do it because this is something exciting and special. I have never seen anything like this before. Can you imagine a book weighing 35 kilos? It's something unique.

One foot in the World Group

New Delhi: Before the World Group playoff between South Africa and India got underway, the home team’s top-ranked South African, Rik de Voest, decided to begin the early mind games with a comment on the togetherness of his squad, even going on to compare it with that of the Indians, who arrived in Johannesburg in batches. After being soundly defeated by India’s No 2 player Rohan Bopanna on Friday, though, the 29-year-old’s crestfallen expression made it clear he wouldn’t have much to say for a while as India put the finishing touches on a 2-0 lead.

After Somdev Devvarman gave the visitors a perfect start with a 7-6 (5) 6-3 6-4 defeat of Izak van der Merwe, Bopanna came back from a first-set capitulation to beat de Voest 2-6 6-4 6-2 6-4, celebrating with a roar and a jump as the rest of the Indian contingent reached over to congratulate him.

“I told Rohan that I have full confidence in him, and he repaid my faith in him. The first set was a washout, but I told him to hang on till he gets his bearing,” a delighted SP Mishra, the team’s non-playing captain, told The Indian Express from Johannesburg. “Compared to when they play on tour, Indians move up to another level when it comes to Davis Cup, they rise to the occasion. Both Somdev and Rohan played very well, and it was a great performance. But no celebrations today, we’re taking it day by day, the doubles is next and it will be tough too,” he added.

Bhullar-Randhawa shootout for DLF Masters

GURGAON: It may well be one of best match-ups the Aircel professional golf Tour has seen when Gaganjeet Bhullar and Jyoti Randhawa walk out in Bhullar the final grouping on the last day of the Rs.8 million DLF Masters at the DLF golf and Country Club on Sunday.

Bhullar, unbeaten in his last four starts on the Indian Tour, is at 11-under 205 after a round of three-under 69, and one shot behind him is Randhawa (67), unbeaten in his last five starts on the Indian Tour. Given such an amazing record between the two, it remains to be seen whose streak will finally come to an end Sunday afternoon.

Behind Bhullar and Randhawa Saturday were Shamim Khan and Digvijay Singh at eight-under 208, while Toran Bikram Shahi (68) shared the fifth place at six-under 210 with Ashok Kumar (71), who had a bad patch with a double bogey and a bogey on 14th and 15th.

S.S.P. Chowrasia (71) and Yusuf Ali (67) were at five-under in tied seventh. Anirban Lahiri (71) and Rahil Gangjee were ninth and 10th, while Shiv Kapur ((72) was tied 12th with six others, including C. Muniyappa (69) at one-under.

"I am not going to put any pressure on myself in the final round. I hit some really good approach shots today. But my overall performance was not as good as yesterday. I'm quite disappointed about missing some short putts.

"Jyoti had a great round considering the pin positions were very tough today. I'm now looking forward to an interesting contest on the final day," said Bhullar.

Randhawa on his part said: "This has been a good week to build back my confidence. I played well on the front nine and it was going fine till the 12th, where I went out of bounds and made a double (bogey). The back nine was up and down. Still I think I played fine. It is great for Indian golf that Gaganjeet and I go out together in the final round."

Bhullar returned a 69 in the third round to lead by one from Randhawa. Shamim and Digvijay are tied for third at eight under 208.

Bhullar took time to settle down in the third round. He was one over after six holes, having missed a short putt for par on the fifth. He then picked up three birdies on the seventh, ninth and 11th to turn the heat on Randhawa, who had grabbed the lead by then.

The Kapurthala lad, who has won once and finished second three times on Asian Tour this year, made bogey on the 12th but came roaring back with great approach shots on the 13th and 15th to grab two invaluable birdies. On the 13th his lob wedge approach came up six feet short of the cup and on the 15th he had a similar result with his approach shot from the right rough. He closed with a bogey-birdie on the last two holes to snatch the lead from Randhawa.

Randhawa came out firing on all cylinders Saturday as he birdied the third, fourth, fifth and seventh to make the turn at four under. He then went past Bhullar and Shamim and took the lead with an incredible eagle-birdie run on the 10th and 11th. On the par four 10th, Randhawa used his pitching wedge to great effect from the right rough. He holed the shot from 125 yards out.

The former Asia no. 1 then stumbled with a double bogey on the 12th as a result of his tee shot going out of bounds. A birdie followed on the 13th before an ordinary approach shot on the 15th led to another bogey. He thus conceded the lead to Bhullar at the end of the day.

WC cancelled due to quota issue

NEW DELHI: The National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) on Friday denied that it had decided against hosting the World Cup in March 2010 due to "infrastructural delay" at the Karni Singh shooting ranges here.

The NRAI said that the event had to be scrapped as it did not offer qualifying berths for the 2012 London Olympics. This explanation came a day after NRAI secretary Baljit Singh Sethi had reportedly linked the decision to lack of preparedness at the ranges.

"We would like to clarify that this has been done purely on the basis of withdrawal of the quota place from the World Cups by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The IOC has decided that there will not be any quota place during World Cups being conducted during the year 2010," Sethi said on Friday.

"We were under the impression that 10 spots would be on offer in the event. When that was not on, we had to cancel it. But

I have never linked the cancellation decision to the pace of construction," Sethi
Senior officials of NRAI said that the world body’s (ISSF) fresh guidelines would have resulted in top shooters staying away from the World Cup. "We had been hoping for home advantage to get some quota places. But why waste resources when we are not going to get anything?" said NRAI official Rajiv Bhatia.

To prove their point, NRAI mailed the letters exchanged between the federation and ISSF over the issue. The ISSF website also gave the Olympic quota place as the reason behind cancellation. It said the first quota places event will be the World Championships in Munich in July next year.

The NRAI secretary said that work at the Karni Singh ranges was on track to host the Commonwealth Championships in February and there’s no threat to the event. He also said that the NRAI has also requested the world body to allot them a World Cup in 2011.

Meanwhile, sports ministry sources said things were heading in the right direction at the ranges. "It’s ridiculous. Pace of construction can’t be the reason for the cancellation. Construction is going on in full force. Equipment for the 50m, 25m and 10m events is already here and will be fitted in by October end. The trap and skeet machines provided by Laporte will be installed soon after," ministry sources said.

"Both the Sports Authority of India and CPWD have given assurance that the range would be ready by Dec 31, 2009. To help our shooters get used to the home conditions, we will allow them to practise there from mid-November," they added.
Sources said the machines were airlifted by Siusascor just to ensure that things were in place in time."We will not wait for the civil work to get over. The equipment will be fitted simultaneously."

Flavio Briatore faces threat of legal action from Nelson Piquet Sr

Friday 18 September 2009 23.34 BST:Monday's meeting of the World Motor Sport Council is unlikely to draw a line under the Formula One race-fixing scandal. Nelson Piquet Sr yesterday threatened legal action against the departed Renault managing director, Flavio Briatore, to release his son from his contract.

Despite Piquet Jr's assertion that Briatore asked him to crash at last year's Singapore grand prix, in order to improve Fernando Alonso's chances of victory, it has emerged that the Brazilian remains contracted to the Italian for 15 years and is obliged to hand over 20% of all future earnings. Briatore, along with the former Renault executive director of engineer-ing, Pat Symonds, left the team on Wed-nesday when Renault said they would not contest the allegations at Monday's hearing.

Piquet Sr said he was waiting for the FIA's verdict before deciding whether to take further action against Briatore.

"I could not talk to other team members about it [the contract] because Nelsinho was working for Flavio and his management has a contract with the team," Piquet Sr told Auto Motor und Sport in Germany. "Now I finally have something – contract violation – to put pressure on Flavio. If the FIA world council confirms the case, I will have a hold for going to court."

The three-time world champion also challenged Briatore to follow through on his threat of legal action over claims that Piquet Jr attempted to blackmail Briatore and the team into keeping him as a driver. He said: "Just go ahead. I have enough money to afford the best lawyers. And what is he going to trial for? Does he want to put the truth on trial?"

The status of the legal claim, launched by Briatore and Renault in the hope of receiving a more sympathetic hearing from the FIA, is unclear. The Piquets are not believed to have received any legal papers and the Metropolitan Police, which Briatore and Renault said they would contact, has no record of any complaint.

After being sacked from Renault and going to the FIA with his claims in July, Piquet Jr last month issued a statement. "I always believed that having a manager was being a part of a team and having a partner," he said. "A manager is supposed to encourage you, support you and provide you with opportunities. In my case it was the opposite. Flavio Briatore was my executioner."

Piquet Sr, who first blew the whistle on the saga to the FIA, said: "At a certain point people like Flavio have so much power they believe they can walk on water. He obviously thought, even though there was lots of proof, no one could catch him."

Briatore and Symonds will not be at Monday's hearing. As they have left Renault the FIA, which licenses teams and drivers but not other individuals, has no power to sanction them. Piquet Jr was offered immunity in return for his co-operation.

Fennell's worries would be addressed by October: Kalmadi

New Delhi:The beleaguered Organising Committee of the 2010 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday promised to sort out each and every concern raised by CGF President Michael Fennell and vowed to deliver the best Games ever. Organising Committee (OC) chairman Suresh Kalmadi described Fennell's stinging criticism of the capital's lethargic preparation for the event as a "wake up call" and said the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) chief would not have a problem when he returns next month for the CGF General Assembly in the city.

"Fennell's observation was a wake up call for us. We have this CGF General Assembly in October and by then, everything would be sorted out," Kalmadi told reporters today. The OC found itself in a spot of bother after Fennell's harsh letter to its Executive Board, warning that the Games was heading for "partial failure" and asked for a meeting with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Kalmadi did not think Fennell's seeking a meeting with the Prime Minister is effectively showing his lack of trust in the OC's capabilities.

"I don't think so. We have no problem with his meeting with the Prime Minister. Come October and everything would be fine by then. Fennell seeking a meeting with the Prime Minister is not an issue with us," he said.

Security and lack of foreign technical expertise are two major areas pointed out by Fennell but Kalmadi insisted that there was nothing to worry about.

"Fennell or no Fennell, we are conscious of our duty about security of the games. An Australian agency comes every two months to assess security and the Home Ministry is also looking at it. I can assure that there will be a foolproof security system during the Games.

It hurts when people suspect our intentions in losses: Younis

KARACHI: Pakistan would do its best to India in the upcoming Champions Trophy but in case of a defeat, skipper Younis Khan has pleaded that the
country accept the result sportingly and not suspect the intentions of the players.

"It really hurts us when people start to suspect our intentions. When false allegations are made while we are playing in a foreign land. It is disturbing for the team," Younis said at National stadium.

The Pakistan skipper said the players were still rattled by the allegations of match fixing that surfaced during the team's recent tour to Sri Lanka.

Younis said there was no doubt that India had a strong batting line-up and their strength had historically been to successfully chase down big targets.

"But as captain, I want to change this trend. I want our team to chase a target against India and win against India in an ICC event. I would like to be known as the captain who changed history," he said.

Pakistan plays its opening match against the West Indies on September 23.

Younis said he would love to win the Champions Trophy for late coach Bob Woolmer.

"His family is in South Africa and if we win the Champions Trophy I will definitely go with the team to his home and share our moments with his family. It would be a fitting tribute to Bob," Younis said.

Mohun Bagan down ONGC 5-1 in Durand Cup

NEW DELHI: Mohun Bagan unleashed an attacking brand of football to overwhelm Oil and Natural Gas Corporation 5-1 in their opening Group IIquarter-final league match of the 122nd ONGC Durand Cup on Wednesday.

Surkumar Singh (ninth and 90+2) and Nigerian Chidi Edeh (16th and 77th) struck twice while Jose Barretto (43rd) scored once for the Kolkata giants, while Chukwuma Udofia pulled one back for ONGC in the 82nd minute at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Mohun Bagan, who finished runners-up in the IFA Shield last week in Kolkata, now need just a draw against JCT in their last quarter-final league match on Friday to make it to the semi-final as Group II toppers.

ONGC, on the other hand, are out of the tournament as they had lost their opening match against JCT 0-1.

Bagan coach Karim Bencherifa experimented with India defender Surkumar in the first half by putting him in between the backline and mid-fielders instead of his usual right back position.

The Manipuri made several runs into the ONGC defence especially from the right and set up forwards Chidi and Barretto on a couple of occasions though he was brought back into his normal right back position in the second session.

It was Surkumar, who opened the account for Mohun Bagan as his feeble right footer bounced awkwardly and hit the net after kissing the right post as the ONGC goalkeeper failed to judge the ball.

Davis cup clash with India will be pretty even: SA coach

JOHANNESBURG: Doubles veteran Leander Paes' absence notwithstanding, the Davis Cup clash between India and South Africa this weekend will be "pretty even", South African coach John-Laffnie de Jager said on Wednesday.

"I foresee a very even contest which could be decided by a single match," De Jager said.

"I believe though that the Indians will be very nervous, because they know that they can beat us," De Jager said.

Paes, who clinched his 10th Grand Slam title at the US Open last week, will not participate in World Group play-off, scheduled from this Friday to Sunday, because of a right shoulder.

Indian captain SP Misra told 'Beeld' he was still expecting Paes to arrive here, while the other doubles specialist Mahesh Bhupathi is expected to land on Wednesday morning.

There has also been concern in some circles that the Indian side will not have enough time to acclimatise to the conditions air before the match on Saturday.

But Misra said singles players Somdev Devvarman and Rohan Bopanna have had no problem so far and their training was going very well.

Seven minutes later, ONGC paid the price for keeping the ball inside their box for too long as Chidi shot home following a scramble inside the penalty area.

Two minutes before the breather, Barretto made amends for wasting a penalty in the 19th minute, by firing in a right footer after being nicely set up by a deflection from ONGC defender CS Saleel from a long kick by goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee.

The second half saw close contest between the two sides with ONGC making some raids in the Bagan citadel. Three minutes into the second session, J Lalsangjuala was clear at the left top edge of the box but he shot straight into the goalkeeper with Surkumar closing on him.

Mohun Bagan were denied another goal by the woodwork at the hour mark when a Chidi shot, after Barretto did all the spadework, came back to play after hitting the left upright.

Chidi though completed his double as he turned in a low right footer past the ONGC goalkeeper in the 77th minute, Surkumar completed the tally by firing in a 35-yard long ranger in the injury time.

Manchester City set to accept Emmanuel Adebayor's violent conduct ban

Manchester City are set to accept a three-match ban for violent conduct imposed on striker Emmanuel Adebayor for his alleged stamp on his former team-mate Robin van Persie in Saturday's Premier League victory over Arsenal.

But the club may request a separate hearing for a charge of improper conduct, brought to address Adebayor's goal celebration, in which he ran the length of the pitch to slide on his knees directly in front of the Arsenal fans. His actions prompted some visiting supporters to react by throwing objects towards the pitch, and Adebayor subsequently apologised to a steward who was injured when struck on the head by an object.

Greater Manchester police also became involved, and wrote to the FA to express their views on the incident. The FA announced yesterday that a special commission would be held to look into the celebration and its aftermath.

The FA issued both charges against Adebayor yesterday, and gave the club until 6pm this evening to mount their defence against the charge of violent conduct. After the Van Persie incident, the City manager Mark Hughes said: "Emmanuel strongly maintains that there was no malice intended in the challenge on Robin van Persie and apologised to him when he hugged him on leaving the field of play at the end of the game."

The statement issued by Van Persie hours after the match was in stark contrast to Hughes's comments, and railed against Adebayor's actions during the match.

City have until 30 September to respond to the lesser charge of improper conduct.

Federer has one more rival for top spot

NEW YORK — World number one Roger Federer began the US Open fortnight with a new top rival for his tennis throne in Andy Murray and ended the year's last Grand Slam with yet another formidable challenger.

Juan Martin Del Potro joined the No. 1 conversation with a shocking 3-6, 7-6 (7/5), 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 6-2 victory over the Swiss star in Monday's US Open final, the 1.98 metre Argentine giant snapping Federer's five-year title run.

Del Potro, who turns 21 next week, jumped into fifth in the latest ATP rankings by winning his Grand Slam final debut.

Federer remained first despite the loss with Spain's injury-hampered Rafael Nadal moving back into second on the list past Murray, who stumbled badly in a fourth-round loss to Croatia's Marin Cilic, and Novak Djokovic placed fourth.

"I have very good players from me to the No. 1," Del Potro said. "For sure, Roger, Rafa, Murray, they are two or three steps more than me. I'm working hard every day hard to be like them.

"But if I play for many years in this level, then they are going to retire and I'm going to be much better."

Time is not all that is on the South American's side.

His formidable forehand and improved fitness caught the eye of 15-time Grand Slam winner Federer when he was forced to rally from two sets down to beat him in a French Open semi-final.

"Every month he was getting better," Federer said. "He was hitting his serves better, from the baseline he was getting more confident. He knows much more now what he needs to do on the tennis court.

"Whereas maybe in the beginning, because he's so tall, he needs to figure out his game, I think he did that in the last six months."

Del Potro sees himself as far from a finished product, but it's bad news for every rival if he can only get better.

"I have everything to learn," Del Potro said. "I want to be a good player in the future. I want to be like them. I'm very happy I'm on my way."

With Nadal nursing strained stomach muscles and already out two months with sore knees and Murray turning in a miserable showing to help clear Del Potro's path to the trophy, the door is open for the big man to climb up the rankings.

Del Potro had lost all six prior meetings with Federer, including a five-set thriller in the French Open semi-finals, but became the only man other than Nadal to defeat Federer in a Grand Slam final.

"I just go my way and try to improve every day my game," Del Potro said. "Of course I'm living much better than two years ago, maybe 12 months ago. But I'm in good shape. I'm physically feeling good with my tennis. That's important."

Harbhajan Singh lashes out at camera

09 Sep 2009:Indian television news channels caught Harbhajan on a bad day as an unfortunate cameraman blocked his path as he attempted to retrieve his luggage from a car.

The volatile Harbhajan is no stranger to controversy. He was found guilty of using "abusive" language to sledge Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds last year, which saw him banned from the 2008 Indian Premier League and suspended from the one-day international side.

A few months later he was suspended for slapping bowler Shanthakumaran Sreesanth during a domestic Twenty20 league match.

He may have taken 330 Test wickets, but his fighting style is more slap than punch, so his county, Punjab, should have no concerns about losing him to the boxing ring any time soon.

Neither the Indian Cricket Board nor Harbhajan have commented on today's events, which come as the national team prepare for a one-day game in Sri Lanka on Saturday.

Vijender in World boxing quarter-finals

NEW DELHI: Olympic bronze medallist and middle weight (75kg) top seed Vijender Singh moved into quarter-finals of the World Boxing Championships after beating Steve Rolls of Canada 4-2 in Milan.

Vijender made into the pre-quarters of the event by outscoring Kazakhstan’s Belgibayev Azamat with a convincing margin of 14-8.

Round one of the pre-quarters ended with the Canadian ahead by 1-0. Although Vijender had managed to land a couple of lusty blows on the target, they did not find favour with the judges. In round two, Vijender capitalised on his hieght advantage and better arm span to score two straight left and right combination punches, to move ahead and finish at 2-1.

The Indiancorner was clearly agitated as they felt that atleast two more legitimate scoring blows delivered by Vijender should have got judges nod.

In round three, Steve Rolls closed the lead to 3-2 before Vijender who was continuously cheered by his Indian supporters, was able to increase the lead to 4-2.

With the seconds ticking away, Vijender intelligently kept the Canadian at arms length by great footwork and sharp jabs.

Vijender Singh now meets Derevyanchenko Sergiy of Ukraine who defeated Killici Adem of Turkey in the other pre quarter-finals match.

In any case this is one of the best performance by Indian boxers at the World Championships in recent times.

In the last World Championships held at Chicago in 2007, Anthresh Lakra (57kg) was the lone Indian to reach the quarter-finals. Thus, the performance of Vijender Singh (75kg) and Dinesh Kumar (81kg) in this World Championship is a record by itself.

India eye number one ranking in Sri Lanka

CHENNAI, India — Coach Gary Kirsten said Wednesday India needed to be consistent in the ongoing tri-series in Sri Lanka to become the world's best one-day team.

India, who have won five successive bilateral series, will top the one-day rankings if they beat both Sri Lanka and New Zealand in the league stage and also win the final on September 14.

"We have set our goals," Kirsten said ahead of the team's departure for Colombo. "One of them is to be the best team in the world. We are headed that way and we are very excited.

"We have to perform well as we continue the quest to be the best. We won the last two series in Sri Lanka and we are confident."

India are without injured opener Virender Sehwag and paceman Zaheer Khan, but Kirsten said the team had the depth to do well.

"Obviously, missing a player like Sehwag is huge," the former South African opener said. "He is a quality batsman, but we have got a lot of depth in our cricket at the moment.

"We have done well in Sri Lanka and are familiar with the conditions. We know we are playing against two good teams, but we have been performing well and we need to maintain our performance."

India open their campaign against New Zealand on Friday and play the hosts the next day. Each side will play two league matches before the top two make it to the final.

Kirsten said the toss would be vital on low, slow Sri Lankan pitches, where chasing a target under lights was not easy.

New Zealand found runs hard to come by on Tuesday when they were bowled out for 119 in reply to Sri Lanka's 216-7 in the opening match.

"Winning the toss is quite important," said Kirsten.

"But if you are going to be a world-class team, you need to win from any situation or condition. We have a good batting line-up which is flexible in the middle order."

He said Rahul Dravid's return to one-day cricket after nearly two years also augured well for the team.

"It is good to have him in the team. With that sort of experience, he is always going to help the team," said Kirsten.

Dravid is only the second batsman in the current team after Sachin Tendulkar to have completed 10,000 runs in one-day internationals.

India's squad: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Gautam Gambhir, Rahul Dravid, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, Yusuf Pathan, Harbhajan Singh, Praveen Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Ashish Nehra, Rudra Pratap Singh, Amit Mishra, Dinesh Karthik, Abhishek Nayar.

Paes survives tough test

September 9, 2009:India's Leander Paes and his Czech partner Lukas Dlouhy have moved into the semi-final of the men's doubles at the US Open.

Paes and Dlouhy, seeded fourth, beat seventh seeded Wesley Moodie of South Africa and Dick Norman of Belgium 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

After winning the first set rather easily, Paes-Dlouhy took a 2-0 lead in the second, but were broken in the fourth and 12th games as Moodie and Norman took the tie to the decider.

Inaugural Karnataka Premier League kicks off

September 09, 2009 (Karnataka):The inaugural Karnataka Premier League was inaugurated on Wednesday evening - with eight teams representing different regions of the state all set to battle it out.

Mysore Maharajas, Mangalore United, Bijapur Bulls were some of the teams representing different regions of Karnataka at the first ever KPL.

The show was launched with lasers and fireworks, song and dance with all the showmanship that was expected from this version of the game. Some film stars shared the spotlight with the cricketers too.

Sudeep, one of the actors present gracing the event, said, "I love cricket - I am an Indian. Acting is my profession, cricket is my passion..."

With few of the Karnataka cricketers taking part in the event, the chances seem to be bleak for the League to be a hit but due to T20's growing popularity, the organizers would definitely be hoping otherwise.

Bagan beat United SC to enter final of IFA Shield

KOLKATA: Mohun Bagan showed nerves of steel even after being reduced to 10 men from the eighth minute onwards to edge out United SC 5-4 in penalty shootout and set up a summit clash against Churchill Brothers in the 114th IFA Shield, on Wednesday.

The newly-laid artificial turf at Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Salt Lake saw the second semifinal being decided through tie-breaker as both the sides failed to score in regulation period and extra time.

The first semifinal between Churchill Brothers and Air India on Tuesday was also decided via penalty shootout in which the Goans won 4-2 after being tied 1-1 in 120 minutes of play.

Substitute goalkeeper Sangram Mukherjee gave Mohun Bagan a flying start in the tie-breaker by saving Jayanta Sen's shot from the spot.

All the five Mohun Bagan penalty takers -- Marcos Pereira, Rakesh Masih, Snehashis Chakraborty, Surkumar Singh and James Singh -- then found the target to send the Green-and-Maroons to the final.

Earlier, Mohun Bagan's starting goalkeeper Shilton Paul did all the hard work thwarting all United efforts for 120 minutes but Sangram emerged the hero with his anticipation diving to the right to deny Sen in the penalty shootout.

Sen's miss proved costly for United though PC Lalawmpuia, Eduardo Coelho, Lal Kamal Bhowmick and Subhashish Roy Chowdhury found the net from the spot.

Younus urges Pakistan to win Champions Trophy

KARACHI — Pakistan captain Younus Khan on Wednesday urged his team to win the elite eight-nation Champions Trophy in South Africa, saying it would signal a fresh beginning in the nation's cricketing fortunes.

"The World Twenty20 success in England (in June) came at a time when the country and our people were in crisis. Now if we win the Champions Trophy it will be tantamount to a fresh beginning," Younus told AFP.

The Champions Trophy was originally scheduled to be held in Pakistan in 2008. It was first postponed to September-October 2009 over security fears before being relocated to South Africa after teams refused to tour Pakistan.

"It would have been best had the Trophy been played before our home fans, but it did not happen. Now I want my team to win the Trophy so that people can rejoice over another success," said Younus.

Younus led Pakistan to this summer's World Twenty20 title amidst crisis in the country, as suicide bombs killed hundreds of people and fighting forced millions to evacuate the Swat valley in North West Frontier Province.

Younus said if Pakistan won the Champions Trophy, which takes place from September 22 to October 5, it would signal renewed hope.

"We are fast coming out of the crisis and I hope that the win in the Champions Trophy will give us hope to build on the game which has suffered a lot in the recent past."

The whole nation celebrated a rare moment of joy when Pakistan beat Sri Lanka in the final to lift the World Twenty20 title on June 21.

Pakistan dedicated their win to the people of Swat and raised funds for those who were suffering there.

"At this point of time our country and team need more and more victories so that we remain amongst the top nations of the world. Winning the trophy is not the only aim. Taking the team to the top of the rankings is the aim," said Younus.

Pakistan lurks fourth in the official one-day rankings and a dismal sixth in the Test standings.

Younus said winning the major ICC (International Cricket Council) events was an imperative.

"I always believe that if a team wins a major ICC event, its standing and image gets better and my aim is to win the Champions Trophy and then the World Cup 2011, and I am confident that the team can achieve that."

Pakistan have never won the Champions Trophy since its inception in 1998. They lost in the semi-finals in 2000 and 2004 and lost in earlier rounds in 1998, 2002 and 2006.

Somdev out but Sania, Leander and Mahesh advance

New York, Sep 4 (PTI) A profligate Somdev Devvarman squandered chances galore to crash out of US Open singles even as Sania Mirza advanced in the women's doubles and mixed doubles events here at Fushing Meadows.

Somdev, who was trailing by two sets, staged a dramatic comeback by blanking 23rd seed German Philipp Kohlschreiber in the third set but eventually lost his second round encounter 3-6 4-6 6-0 2-6 after a close to three-hour battle last night.

With Somdev's defeat, Indian challenge ended in the singles events. Sania is already out of singles after suffering one of the worst defeats of her career in the second round against Italian friend Flavia Pennetta.

Somdev, who won three qualifying matches to make it to the main draw, could convert only four of the 20 breakpoints against experienced Kohlschreiber, who had defeated Novak Djokovic in the French Open.

Giancarlo Fisichella savours Ferrari call-up in place of Felipe Massa

Thursday 3 September 2009 20.00 BST:Giancarlo Fisichella will replace the injured Felipe Massa at Ferrari for the rest of the season, starting at next weekend's Italian grand prix, after he was granted special dispensation by Force India. Fisichella, who finished second for the British-based team in last Sunday's Belgian grand prix, will become Ferrari's test driver in 2010 and the move brings a 14-year Formula One career to potentially spectacular finish after only three wins in 226 starts.

"I'm in seventh heaven," said Fisichella. "I still can't believe it – that the dream of my life comes true. Over the last week some really incredible things happened to me: the pole position and then second place at Spa and now I'm called by Ferrari to race the last five races of the season for them. I'll give my best to recompense the Scuderia for this great opportunity they gave me: I know that it won't be easy, but I'll give it everything to gain the best possible results."

The Italian will join Kimi Raikkonen, the winner in Belgium, and the move comes at the expense of Luca Badoer who failed to impress during his two races with the Italian team. "I want to say that I'm very sorry for Luca," said Fisichella. "I know how much he cared to race in Monza behind the wheel of a Ferrari, because this is the best thing that can happen to an Italian driver, to drive a red car in front of our fans."

Dr Vijay Mallya, the Force India chairman, stressed that there had been no financial settlement with Ferrari despite allowing Fisichella to break the final year of his contract. "For any Italian driver, a Ferrari race seat is a long-held dream and for Giancarlo it was no exception," said Mallya. "No one should stand in the way of this. Furthermore the agreement will secure Giancarlo's long-term future with Ferrari and it would be incorrect to jeopardise this, particularly when Giancarlo has made such a vital contribution to Force India."

Force India have not decided on Fisichella's replacement though the team's Italian test driver, Vitanonio Liuzzi, is the favourite.

'Modi party to IMG decision'

KOLKATA: The IPL franchise owners may be cut up with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for severing ties with the International Management Group (IMG), but the fact remains that IPL commissioner Lalit Modi was a signatory to the working committee's decision to pull the plug on the sports management company.

According to a TOI source who attended the said working committee meeting last month, several state associations objected to IMG being paid far in excess to the services it had rendered during IPL-I.

Among the state associations to object were the Delhi & Districts Cricket Association (DDCA), the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA), and the motion was passed by the house unanimously.

Modi, the brain behind IPL, surprisingly didn't counter the arguments offered by the likes of Jagmohan Dalmiya and Rajeev Shukla.

It's difficult to say why the issue was not hotly debated even though the objection raised was not specific in nature.

It is also not clear why the working committee, the all-powerful arm of the BCCI, was in such tearing hurry to pass a resolution to this effect on this potentially tricky issue. A few working committee members that TOI spoke to admitted to the haste on their part but are livid with the IPL franchise owners for "poking their nose into" something that is clearly "none of their business".

"The issue involves two parties - the BCCI and IMG. The franchise owners have no locus standi. The matter is being reviewed by the BCCI president, who I am sure will come up with an acceptable solution," a working committee member said.

While just about everyone in the BCCI feels that the fee being charged by the IMG for their services is quite high, there are many who rate their quality of service highly. Indications are that unless the IMG continues to be rigid on this issue, a compromise of sorts will be worked out that will see the sports management company and the IPL continue their honeymoon.

The BCCI Working Committee (All the office-bearers): DDCA; TNCA; CAB, MCA; UPCA (Permanent Test centres); Haryana CA (North); Andhra CA (South); National Cricket Club(East); Saurashtra CA (West); MPCA (Central); Karnataka CA; Punjab CA; Gujarat CA; Vidarbha CA (Associations who have staged Tests).

Questions Raised Over The Role Of Arbitrator In Bhaichung Bhutia Case

04-Sep-2009 8:27:43 AM:On the eve of the Nehru Cup final, the AIFF Executive Committee decided to hire a reputed lawyer to look into the transfer saga which has gone far too long for anyone’s comfort.

However, it must be noted that an arbitrator is called for in any case when both parties agree to follow and there must be an arbitration agreement in place. In Bhaichung’s case, according to what AIFF general secretary Alberto Colaco was quoted saying, there isn’t any.

“In his letter, Bhaichung Bhutia has informed us that there was no arbitration clause in his contract with Mohun Bagan. So we need a legal expert to look into this,” said Colaco.

Meanwhile, the Indian FA haven’t kept in check the laws mentioned in its Constitution which clearly mentions that in case of an arbitration, all the previous stages of appeal have to be exhausted.

Only the arbitrators shall deal with appeals against decisions and sanctions of the last instance, after all previous stages of appeal available at AIFF, Member, Club level have been exhausted. The reference to arbitrators shall be sought by an application made to the AIFF General Secretariat within 10 days of the notification of the decision. (Article 60 (i))

So far there hasn’t been any decision announced. It must be remembered that Bhaichung’s case could have had a judgement had Indian Football Association (IFA) been given a free hand to do so. But needless interference from the AIFF, which wrote to the IFA, stating that since the Indian captain wants the transfer saga to come to a close as quickly as possible, they shall refer the matter to the Players Status Committee (PSC). The IFA refused to give a decision as they felt that it could be embarrassing for them if their decision and the one taken by the PSC would be contradictory.

The PSC wrote to the AIFF that without the decision of the IFA and all the documents provided, as they believed that they were provided with insufficient details, they can’t take a decision. Next, the Indian FA appoints Alberto Colaco to get the two parties for an amicable solution which didn’t produce any factual results as was known to all.

The AIFF have appointed a single solicitor as the arbitrator to resolve the case or “settle the dispute”, which also goes against what’s mentioned in their laws!

AIFF shall create an option for recourse to arbitration, by nominating a panel of 10 independent arbitrators to resolve any disputes between AIFF, its Members, Clubs, Players, Officials and all those involved in the Game of Association Football. The arbitration tribunal will only deal with internal disputes that do not fall under the jurisdiction of the other two judicial bodies of the AIFF (Disciplinary Committee and the Appeal Committee). (Article 59)

It is also stated that the Arbitrators wouldn’t entertain complaints on (a) violations of the Laws of the Game; (b) suspensions of up to four matches or up to three months; (c) decisions passed by an independent and duly constituted arbitration tribunal of a Member. (d) Decisions of the Disciplinary and Appeal Committee. (Article 60 (ii))

Also the arbitrators are empowered to deal with all disputes between a third party and any entities or persons only if an arbitration agreement exists (Article 60 (iii), which isn’t case with Bhaichung’s contract.

One wonders whether the Indian skipper shall ever get a decision on his transfer saga and ongoing duel with Mohun Bagan due to plain mishandling of the affair.

Dhoni hammers unbeaten 106

Mohali: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (106) and Manvinder Bisla (152) saw Air India Blue through to the semi-finals after they slammed unbeaten centuries in their massive 136-run victory over Indian Revenue in a rain-truncated group A match in the Sahara BCCI Corporate trophy here Thursday.

In a match that was reduced to 42 overs per side due to repeated rain-interruptions, Indian Revenue captain Amay Kurasyia’s decision to field backfired as the Air India Blue top-order put up a relentless display of aggressive batting at the PCA stadium. Dhoni alone accounted for seven fours and six sixes in his 61-ball unbeaten hundred.

In the run chase, opposition opener Ameya Shrikhande made a valiant effort with a 119-ball 121 but he found no support from the other batsmen in the team. Shrikhande batted till the 38th over, hitting 16 fours and a six. Indian Revenue ended their allotted 42 overs for just 222 from the loss of eight wickets.

With Thursday’s win, Air India Blue topped their group with seven points and will take on group C winners Tata Sports Club in the second semi-final here on Sunday.

In Bangalore, Air India Red joined Dhoni’s team after Suresh Raina smashed an unbeaten 92 for a thumping seven-wicket victory over Indian Cements in their last group D match.

Raina sent the Indian Cements bowlers for a leather hunt in his 107-ball innings which was studded with seven fours and two sixes at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here.

Earlier, put in to bat, India Cements made 243 for nine thanks mainly to contributions from S. Badrinath (91) and Rahul Dravid (66) after the match was reduced to 47 overs a side following a brief shower during the 15th over.

In Dharamshala, Tata SC strolled into the semis after their crucial and last Group C match against Indian Oil was washed out due to continuous downpour at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association stadium. The Ajit Agarkar-led Tata SC, by virtue of their win against All India Public Sector Sports Promotion Board (AIPSSPB) in the rain-truncated group C opener Tuesday, moved to the last four stage. They will face Air India Blue on Sunday at Mohali.

In Visakhapatnam, Oil and Natural Gas Corporation became the fourth semi-finalist after their last group B match against Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

summarised scores

Air India Blue 362/1 in 42 ovs (M. Bisla 152, M.S. Dhoni 106). Indian Revenue 222/3 in 42 ovs (A. Shrikhande 152; R.P. Singh 2/24, P. Singh 2/34) Air India Blue won by 143 runs via VJD method.

India Cements 243/9 in 47 ovs (S. Badrinath 91, R. Dravid 66). Air India Red 244/3 in 43 ovs (S. Raina 92 .., N. Ojha 59). Air India Red won by seven wickets.

Raina charges Air India Red to semi-finals

September 3, 2009:Suresh Raina hit a sparkling 92 after Naman Ojha laid the platform with a breezy 59 to charge Air India Red to a semi-final contest against ONGC.

It could have been a tricky chase on a slow wicket but Ojha and Raina killed the contest with their attractive aggression. Ojha waited for the new-ball bowlers to be taken off the attack before he upped the ante in style. In the 13th over, P Amarnath's first, Ojha crashed a full delivery for a stunning six over extra cover. It was the beginning of the onslaught. Rahul Dravid brought on spin in the form of R Ashwin from the other end but Ojha responded with a ferocious airy inside-out drive over covers. He went on to pull Amarnath and heave Ashwin for more boundaries to provide impetus to the chase.

Ojha's aggression allowed Raina to settle down through some nervy moments before he too started to scythe through the attack. He got moving with a cover-driven boundary before he hit the best shot of the day: a breathtaking straight six off Amarnath. The shots kept coming in a flood: a drag through midwicket, a peachy drive through covers, a six over midwicket, and even a pulled boundary off Amarnath which was a tad unconvincing as he took his eyes off but went through with the swat. But for the most part, after the initial period, he looked secure.

India Cements had couple of moments in which they could have turned the game. In the 14th over Ojha, on 23 then, hit a hard cover drive and Suresh Kumar nearly pulled off a blinder but couldn't hold on. And the next chance, much simpler this time, came when Raina, on 53, swung Hemang Badani straight to deep midwicket where the substitute fielder Shivakumar dropped a straightforward chance.

Ojha departed soon after that but with Raina, who was later given two more reprieves on 88 and 90, steered the chase along with an equally aggressive Yuvraj Singh to take the game away from India Cements, who had earlier posted a competitive total courtesy an 133-run untroubled partnership between S Badrinath and Dravid.

What stood out in their partnership was the serenity with which they went about their task. With two men who are extremely aware of their own game, it was almost a tango between master and pupil.

Dravid's ODI game is so structured that even though it seems predictable, it is always a safe, secure and successful blueprint. Badrinath is increasingly tending towards a similar approach, especially in domestic cricket. As usual, he started with an open bat-face push for a single to get off the mark and as he settled down, he started unfurling all the familiar shots.

Badrinath repeatedly played the paddle shot - he even picked a few boundaries with it - against the spinners and mixed it with charges down the track. Against seamers, he played those typical short-arm jabs of his and when the bowlers banged it in shorter, he reeled off his upper cuts over the slip cordon. In between these forcing shots, he played innumerable dabs into gaps to rotate the strike. His best stroke of the day, though, was an on-the-up cover drive off the sharp left-arm seamer Saurabh Netravalkar.

Badrinath started off with a feisty cut and a punchy drive against the seamers before lifting Ajith Chandila for two sixes to cow corner in the 19th over. He has of late become more inventive in his shot-making and he continued to show that prowess today with a paddle shot against the medium-pacer Mundeep Mangela. On occasion he moved outside leg stump and walked across the sticks to upset the bowlers' rhythm successfully. He fell when he charged out too early against Chandila, who pushed it wide down the leg side to have him stumped.

Dravid was out before Badrinath, holing out to long-on, but by then he had played another one of his patent innings. He started off with singles and twos and never looked in any trouble as he calmly steered the innings towards a healthy total. He was on 39 when suddenly he decided to up the ante. As he often does against the spinners, he lunged out to Ankit Chavan to heave him over wide long-on. He didn't leave the crease; it was just a purposeful lunge as he wristed it up and over the boundary. The next delivery was pulled to wide of midwicket and a little later, he chipped Dhawal Kulkarni over mid-on.

After the dismissal of Dravid and Badrinath, the lower order crumbled cheaply and perhaps, it was that period where India Cements lost the game. It proved to be the difference between a merely competitive total and a daunting one.

Safina struggles, Dementieva dumped in US Open

Shaky top seed Dinara Safina turned in another patchy performance to escape with a victory, while American Melanie Oudin produced the shock of the event so far with a 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 knockout of fourth seed Elena Dementieva on Thursday.

It was hit-or-miss for Safina, troubled by doubts over her status as a world number one who has yet to win a Grand Slam title.

The Russian got past Kristina Barrois of Germany 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3, no thanks to 15 double faults and 38 unforced errors in their second-round match-up.

The two-and-a-quarter-hour struggle was turned in the seed's favour by 43 unforced errors from her opponent.

Dementieva, the 2004 losing finalist, had been tipped as an outside title favourite, given the apparent knee injury to third Venus Williams and Safina's lack of confidence after losing three Grand Slam finals in two seasons.

But the Russian failed to come through in the clutch as 70th-ranked Oudin continued to surprise after Wimbledon fourth round performance just weeks ago.

The 17-year-old said that despite some leg pain, she put everything into her serve on match point to end the two-hour, 45-minute contest.

"I thought this match point might be my last chance, so I threw in a really big serve. I'm so happy I won it."

Russian 13th seed Nadia Petrova reached the third round over Julie Coin of France 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), while Romanian teen Sorana Cirstea beat Stephanie Dubois of Canada 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 with a third set littered with five straight breaks of serve.

In men's play, Germany's Tommy Haas advanced at the expense of American Robert Kendrick 6-4, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), the winner producing a dozen aces and 48 winners.
